They were designed as rigid tubes with the steering wheel attached at one end and a gearwheel gear at the other. The gearwheel moved the toothed rack, which was attached to the steering gear. Most steering columns today feature a telescopic design, which means that the component parts are pushed into each other in the event of an impact.
